How to Make an Outstanding Tiny Desk AI Video of Yourself, Step by Step
Updated
Short answer
You need one clear, front-facing photo and a few minutes. Upload it on the home page, confirm that you are over 18 and have permission to use the photo, sign in, add credits if you need them, and generate. You get a vertical 9:16 MP4 of about 19 seconds with sound, with your face on the lead singer. Download it, switch on TikTok’s AI-generated label, and post.

The short version
- Pick one clear photo of one adult: you, or someone who agreed to be in the video.
- Add it on the home page and tick the box that confirms you are 18 or older and have permission.
- Press the generate button. If you are not signed in, sign in; if you need credits, pick a pack.
- Wait a few minutes. The video plays on the page and waits for you if you close it.
- Download the MP4, turn on the AI-generated label and post it.
1. Choose the photo
The photo matters more than anything else, because the video rebuilds the lead singer’s face from it. Use a normal phone photo in which the person looks toward the camera, the eyes are visible and the light is even. A selfie works. Head and shoulders is the framing that gives the best results, and JPG, PNG and WebP files up to 10 MB are accepted.
A plain, light background helps. In our tests, a very dark or cluttered photo background sometimes showed up in the lead singer’s shots, so a simple backdrop is the safer choice. The expression in the photo can carry over too, so a relaxed, natural face is a better starting point than an unusual one.
Works well
One person, face toward the camera, eyes visible, even light, head and shoulders in frame, natural expression.
Avoid
Sunglasses, masks, hats that hide the face, heavy beauty filters, cartoons, group photos and very small faces. Anything hidden in the photo has to be invented by the model.
Permission
Only upload photos of yourself or of adults who agreed to appear. Photos of celebrities, athletes, coaches or politicians are allowed only with their own authorization, and photos of minors are never allowed.
2. Know what you will get
Every video follows the same five shots in about 19 seconds. Your photo is used for the lead singer’s two shots, and the rest of the band is generated unless you add more photos. Add a sax photo and the sax shot is yours too; choose Full band and you can add up to five photos, one for each seat, which costs 20 credits.
| Shot | What happens | Who is in it |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | The lead singer opens the song | Your photo |
| 2 | The band grooves behind the desk | Generated band, or your keys and backing singers in the full band |
| 3 | Close-up of the lead singer laughing | Your photo |
| 4 | The saxophone player takes a short solo | Your sax photo if you add one, otherwise generated |
| 5 | The band closes out the song | Generated band, or your photos in the full band |
3. Sign in and add credits
A video uses 10 credits, or 20 for the full band. Credits are sold in one-time packs with no subscription: 10 credits (one video) for $9.90, 30 credits (three videos) for $19.90 or 50 credits (five videos) for $29.90. A full band video uses 20 credits. A full band video needs 20 credits in your balance, so a single 10-credit pack is not enough. Credits never expire. If a video fails, its credits are returned automatically, and an unused pack can be refunded in cash within 14 days.
You sign in with Google or an email address. You do this when you press the generate button, not before, so you can choose your photo first. Your photo stays in your browser while you sign in or pay, and when payment finishes the page returns to the home page and starts the video for you.
4. Generate and wait
Generation takes a few minutes. While you wait, the page shows a progress panel with a running timer. You can lock your phone or switch apps, and you can close the page: the finished video is waiting when you come back signed in. Your uploaded photo is used only for your video and is deleted within 7 days.
If something goes wrong, the panel tells you, and the credits for that video go back to your balance automatically. You do not need to contact anyone to get them back.
Tips for the best result
- Use the original photo from your phone, not a screenshot or a photo that has been compressed by a messaging app.
- Stand facing a window or a lamp so that the light is on your face rather than behind you.
- Hold the camera at eye level. A photo taken from far below or far above changes the shape of the face.
- Keep your mouth relaxed. A natural, closed-mouth smile copies more reliably than an extreme expression.
- Take two or three photos and choose the sharpest one. Each video uses credits, so it pays to choose carefully.
- If you are not sure, press the link that uses the example photo first to see how the page works.
5. Download and post
Press the download button to save the MP4. It is vertical, so it fits TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts without cropping, and the sound is already in the file, so you do not need to add a track.
Before you post, switch on the AI-generated content label in the post settings. TikTok’s synthetic media policy asks creators to label AI-generated content that shows realistic scenes, and an honest label also protects you if the clip is shared further. Keep the caption light, and do not present the clip as real footage.
Common problems
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| The face looks a little different from the photo | Use a sharper, front-facing photo in good light. AI video is close but never exact. |
| A dark or busy background shows up in the video | Try a photo against a plain, light wall. |
| The photo is rejected | Your credits come back automatically. Try another photo. |
| You closed the page before it finished | Open the site again while signed in; your video is waiting on the home page. |
| Your credits do not appear right after paying | Wait a minute and refresh. Payment confirmation can take a short while. |
| You want two or more people in one video | Add a sax photo, or choose Full band and add up to five photos. Seats without a photo are filled by AI. |

Questions
How long does it take to make a Tiny Desk AI video?
Usually a few minutes. You can close the page and come back; the finished video waits on the home page while you are signed in.
Do I need to sign up?
Yes. You need an account to generate a video, and you are asked to sign in when you press the generate button. Creating an account is free; each video uses 10 credits (20 for the full band).
Is there a free preview or free version?
Not from your own photo: every video is a paid AI render, so there is no free generation or free download. You can still see the result first, because the before/after slider on the home page puts the original clip next to a recreated example. If a video fails, its credits are returned automatically, and an unused pack can be refunded within 14 days.
Can I put two people in one video?
Yes. Upload a photo for the lead singer and add one for the sax player, or choose Full band and add up to five photos. Any seat without a photo is generated.
How much does a Tiny Desk AI video cost?
A video uses 10 credits, or 20 for the full band. Packs are 10 credits (one video) for $9.90, 30 credits for $19.90 and 50 credits for $29.90. They are one-time purchases and the credits never expire.
Which photo formats are accepted?
JPG, PNG and WebP files up to 10 MB. Use one clear photo of one adult, framed from the shoulders up.
Should I label the video as AI on TikTok?
Yes. TikTok’s synthetic media policy asks creators to label AI-generated content that shows realistic scenes, and the label is a switch in the post settings.
